Léonie Emma Marie Guers
In the following interview, we asked EPFL architecture graduate Léonie Emma Marie Guers how she found out about our programme and what her experience has been so far.

What motivated you to apply for the Master in Integrated Building Systems (MIBS) programme?
I was looking for a programme that would help me deepen my knowledge of the technical aspects of architecture and bridge the gap between academic work and industry. A good friend of mine, who did a Bachelor's in Architecture at EPFL with me, went on to do this Master's programme and gave me some valuable insights into the postgraduate studies. When I checked the curriculum, every description on the website matched what I was looking for.
What are some of the highlights and challenges you have faced during your studies so far?
Returning to school after a few years away from the academic system was surprising! Some of the technical courses were particularly challenging, but it felt great to have my mind stimulated again. One of the highlights of the programme is the small size of the cohort admitted each year. With less than 20 students in my cohort, we have become like a family – a close-knit group of friends who support each other with practical questions and course enquiries.
How do you think you have benefited from your studies?
The curriculum has been extremely enriching for me. Firstly, I have had the opportunity to connect and grow with peers who share similar thoughts and perspectives on the world of architecture. Secondly, with our diverse backgrounds, we learn from each other's unique skills and experiences and have been able to apply them frequently in group projects.
Who would you recommend MIBS to?
I recommend MIBS to people who see architecture as more than just design and believe that the technical aspects ("sometimes") take precedence. I would also recommend it to those who are considering a career path away from the traditional architect. With its interdisciplinary approach, this programme broadens future opportunities and allows you to tailor your learning to your career aspirations.
