MIBS Spotlight Lunch Talk with Dr. Joris Burger of Sto SE & Co. KGaA

Dr. Joris Burger is Specialist System Design within the Research & Development Department of Sto SE & Co. KGaA – a global market leader in insulating façade systems. His focus areas include the development of innovative façade systems and implementing circular economy strategies. He has studied Architecture and Building Technology in the Netherlands, Sweden, and Japan and completed his doctoral research at the ETH Zurich, Chair of Architecture and Digital Fabrication.

Key insights to presentation:

  • At Sto, the research and development of sustainable facade solutions is driven by several competences within the R&D department.
  • Circularity serves as a core framework in Sto's approach to facade design that is energy efficient and promotes low carbon construction.
  • Retrofitting older buildings and being able to recycle the majority of materials remains a key focus for circular facade design, but has its limitations.
  • Q&A: Industrial and academic research have very similar processes and approaches.

Sto is currently collaborating with our Zero Carbon Building Systems Lab on a joint research project, further strengthening the link between research and industry in advancing sustainable building technologies.
